Wizards & Warriors™  is an immersive summer camp experience that includes costumed characters, outdoor battles and mystical creature encounters.  Our imaginative staff creates an emotionally and physically engaging fantasy world for our campers, in a safe, fun and educational environment.

Each day, our campers LIVE the story,

which is adjusted daily based on the decisions our heroes make in the game. Sidleterra is an open world where all choices have consequences -- good or bad. It's not only a wonderful opportunity to built self confidence, but a fantastic learning experience as well!

Our heroes solve mysteries, decode messages, build traps, decipher puzzles, brainstorm solutions to disputes between rival tribes, learn about history, mythology, science and math, and earn points to level up their powers to defeat the forces of evil. Where else can you learn so much while spending the day outdoors playing?

All meals are provided for our heroes.

Adventuring Parties are the “cohorts” or groups our heroes will be traveling in this summer. Cohorts reduce Covid-19 transmission risk through lower capacity interactions and decreased group-to-group mixing.

Each Adventuring Party will include 10 heroes and 2 counselors.

NEW THIS YEAR: There is a world where adventures are just a step away. At Ranger Camp, teens face notable challenges that push the boundaries and require strong alliances for success.  This camp program is for teens who are collaborative, quick on their feet to solve difficult problems, and are ready to see what's hidden within the shadows of the world.

Rangers is a camp program designed specifically for our older and more mature teens (ages 15-18) who want to experience a higher level of roleplaying, problem-solving, and immersive adventure. This program is designed to offer an extra challenge to those heroes who are a bit more experienced, while at the same time providing the opportunity to develop skills like learning how to lead a group successfully.

Rangers are a diverse set of heroes that the Gate of Destiny has called upon to take on quests for more experienced adventurers. The goal of the Rangers is to help protect the realm of Sidleterra from new evils that plague it. So gather your finest foam weapons and read up on your arcane knowledge, for only through darkness will a hero shine.

Summer Camp participants for this program are ages 15-18 and are individuals who are drawn to great storytelling and in-depth fantasy roleplay. Costuming and character sheets help you determine how to become your own hero. You can expect to encounter darker themes and challenges for which there is no clear right or wrong, or good or bad solution.

What is Sidleterra?

And what do our heroes face while they're here?

Sidleterra is a land of magic and mystery, a realm between realms, where myths and legends collide. Populated by mighty warriors, powerful mages and impeccable healers, Sidleterra depends on its heroes to balance compassion and chaos. When faced with incursions from goblins, cyclopes or event ice zombies, the community relies on its heroes from all walks of life to band together to vanquish any adversary. None of these beings can be defeated by a solitary warrior. Those who step through the Gate of Destiny must be prepared to not only marshal their courage against marauding Ice Zombies, but also to strike a treaty with the Goblin King, draw on their compassion to help a poor farmer who lost his home to Baba Yaga, or even broker communications between disparate warring tribes. Sidleterra depends on its heroes, and Sidleterra is looking for you!

Each hero will choose a house to align him/herself with, and travel with on adventures.

Each house stands for a different ideal, so choose wisely!

Houses are different than Adventuring Parties.

  • FIRST SWORDS - The First Swords are the frontline of Sidleterra. This house is the home to some of Sidleterra’s strongest warriors. These heroes are always ready for a fight, and are courageous enough to fight enemies most others want to avoid. The First Swords Symbol is two crossed swords, their house power is First Strike: Once a day these heroes can cause bonus stamina damage to an enemy or object.

  • DEFENDERS - The shield of Sidleterra lies within the Defender House. This house consists of our protectors, the first line of defense, who fight for Sidleterra. When others must fall back, the Defenders are there to jump into action. This house is for heroes who are interested in developing defensive strategies, and willing to put others before themselves. The symbol of the Defenders is the shield and fist. They possess the Heart of Sidleterra which, when alone, allows them to shield a friend from danger, and as a group grants them a brief moment of invincibility.

  • SILVER CITADEL - Scouts of the Silver Citadel are quick on their feet, tactile, and observant. They are the intelligence branch of Sidleterra, gathering information and knowledge, these scouts see what others may miss. Heroes interested in joining Silver Citadel are logical and clever, they find both brains and brawn to be key elements in winning a fight. Their symbol is a rook. The House power of Silver Citadel is Invisible Scout: Once per day after an enemy flees or character leaves they can send an invisible scout to monitor them and get information later that evening.

  • HOUSE OF STEFAN THE BLACK - Heroes in the House of Stefan the Black are creative, clever, and loyal. This house believes that every problem has many solutions and weighs out each one. This House is for heroes who are ready to negotiate with enemies, or find solutions in an unconventional manner. These heroes are not scared to take the road less traveled or question what is right. The House symbol is a black raven. Their House power is Raven’s Insight: This creates a zone of truth, whoever is stuck inside can not lie.

  • SERVANTS OF THE WOODLAND REALM - Servants of the Woodland Realm are the protectors of nature in Sidleterra; defenders of wood and earth, sea and sky. The heroes in this house are extremely compassionate, they see beyond what’s on the surface and really see the heart of all creatures. Woodland Realm is for heroes who believe in protecting those who may not be able to protect themselves, and will do whatever it takes to protect nature. Their house symbol is an acorn and leaf. Their House power is Druid Speech: This allows them to speak with animals.

Each hero will also choose a type of power that he/she will study and use while on adventures.

Powers are also known as classes in role-playing games.  There is a Guild, or center of learning, for each class of power.

A hero may belong to more than one Guild.

  • FIGHTERS' GUILD – All heroes can swing a sword, only the Fighters’ Guild can teach you how to be a master of the sword. The Fighters’ Guild provides a place to train and to study for those heroes interested in being the best sword fighter they can be. They understand the nuances of when to parry, when to feint, and when to strike the final blow. Legends tell of other abilities taught by former Fighters’ Guild members including the most powerful of abilities…Slay.

  • MAGES' GUILD – The Mages’ Guild holds the secrets to spell casting and magic protection. This guild is for heroes dedicated to the study and application regarding the proper use of magic. There are stories of powerful Mages who have learned to combine their spells with weapons.

  • ALCHEMISTS' GUILD – The Alchemists’ Guild consists of the tinkerers of Sidleterra. Here individuals combine science and elements from the natural world to create helpful items for adventuring. Heroes who join this guild must be patient with their research, enamored by science, and appreciative of natural elements.

  • HEALERS' GUILD – The Healers’ Guild members have a fascination with the body, mind, and spirit. They study the healing arts to help protect fellow heroes and themselves, by using battle medicine and the potions they have created. Every day new ingredients and components are discovered because of the heroes in this guild due to their determination to constantly improve. Heroes in this guild are patient, thoughtful, and emphatic.

Sidleterra and all of its component parts are a trademark of Guard Up, Inc.

The fantasy world of Sidleterra will manifest on the grounds of the lovely Publick House Inn in Sturbridge, Massachusetts this year. Heroes will explore, battle, and adventure their way through 66 acres of this enchanted property, including enticing walking trails, delightful meadows, intriguing cemeteries, beguiling barns, bewitching forests, and even a beautiful gazebo.

This new location will provide all the amenities of a hotel in a more quaint and intimate setting. Wizards and Warriors camp will take place in a private section of the inn, and will include a sleeping quarters building reserved exclusively for The Story School.  Meeting spaces and dining spaces are also private and isolated from other hotel guests. The accommodation will also provide hotel-quality food for our campers and counselors.

At this location, professional cleaners who have a full year experience with COVID disinfecting policies will be keeping our heroes safe. All of these considerations and amenities will allow our camp team to present a world that our heroes can fully immerse themselves in, escaping from the world around us while also being safe and socially distanced from other potential inn guests. As we continue this journey, our camp team is in constant communication with the local Sturbridge Health department, plus following State and CDC COVID guidelines and regulations.

Updated June 1, 2021

**Please check this page periodically for updates**

We have all watched COVID-19 impact our world, affecting everyone in some capacity, and hoped for a quick resolution. Cancelling our 2020 in-person camp last year due to the impact of the pandemic was a hard decision for us.

Although we at The Story School were able to help transition the programs of Guardian Adventures online and ran a successful virtual summer, we know it was not the same. Even though we are still dealing with the uncertainty of this virus, The Story School is hoping for brighter days ahead and are excitedly preparing for summer 2021 with both virtual and in-person programming.

The Story School will be following all guidelines put out by the CDC, the MA Department of Public Health, and the Massachusetts Camp Association, in order to protect campers, families, and our community as we move forward. Our top priority is to ensure that everyone has a safe, fun, and educational camp experience.

If you have a specific question about what Wizards & Warriors Summer Camp will look like amidst COVID-19, please contact Camp Director Haley Mosher or Executive Director Chris Wiley at guardian@thestoryschool.org

The Story School will continue to watch as guidelines and regulations develop to see if/where we will need to make any adjustments as our program draws near.

To meet the CDC suggested guidelines for summer camps, we will be limiting our cohort sizes (also known as adventuring parties) to 10 campers with 2 counselors per group. This will reduce the capacity of campers and staff that will be allowed on-site this summer. This will limit our registration spots for our residential overnight camp. PLEASE NOTE that we expect slots to fill up much more quickly due to the decreased availability.

Below you will find a summary of actions we are taking to help ensure that we are lowering the risk of exposure to COVID-19 as much as possible:

  • We are intensifying cleaning and disinfection practices at the Publick House Inn, disinfecting commonly touched surfaces on a daily basis in areas used by our camp community.

    • Objects used during activities, such as encounters or mods, will either be disinfected between hero use or another set of items will be used in its place.

    • For meals this summer, we will have staggered meal periods to reduce crowds and meals will be eaten by cohorts.

    • During Staff Training, staff will review cleaning supplies and how to use them properly.

    • The Publick House Inn’s staff have handled COVID-19 over the past year and are very well equipped to manage our 8-week stay.

  • Campers will travel exclusively in cohorts and practice social distancing.

    • Cohorts will minimize mixing between campers.

    • Cohorts will contain 10 campers with 2 counselors maximum.

  • Mask Policy

    • This summer campers and staff will be required to wear masks indoors and around other adventuring parties/cohorts.

    • Campers will have the option to not wear their masks outside if they are only with their assigned cohort/adventuring party after completion of COVID testing while at camp

    • Campers will be allowed to take masks off to eat indoors, but they will be 6ft apart from other party members.

    • Staff this summer will be required to wear their masks at all times, except when eating.

  • Testing Policy

    • Prior to coming on-site, all campers and staff will be required to perform a COVID-19 test taken within the last 72 hours prior to the start of their camp session.

    • Campers will participate in a COVID-19 test upon arrival to camp, and be in a modified quarantine until results are returned.

    • Campers will participate in a 3rd COVID-19 test 5 days into the camp session.

  • Visitation Policy

    • This summer visitors will not be allowed on-site unless there is an emergency.

    • This policy includes but is not limited to: parents, guardians, relatives, and friends.

    • The Story School Year-Round Staff will be allowed onsite with permission from the Executive Director Chris Wiley as necessitated for coverage and support.

  • Multi-Session Sign-up

    • We will be allowing multi-session registration this summer. However, campers will be required to stay on-site for the duration of their stay. This includes all weekends between sessions.

  • Weekends

    • During past years The Story School has allowed campers to return home on weekends during sessions. This summer however, campers are required to remain on-site during the entirety of their session.

  • Electronics

    • The Story School will allow campers to have some technology time, but only on the weekends, in order to help accommodate our new visitation restrictions and on-site attendance requirements.

    • The Story School is still committed to giving our heroes an “unplugged” experience and they will not have access to any electronics outside of the specific exceptions above or as necessitated by a matter of health and safety.

The following precautions must be taken in order to help protect our community this summer:

  1. Conducting a 2-week modified self-quarantine of low risk activities is advised.

    1. Low risk activities consist of masked interactions, social distancing, and outdoor interactions with people outside home groups.

    2. Campers are required to disclose any high-risk activities prior to attending camp.

  2. All campers and staff are required to arrive with a negative COVID-19 conducted within 72 hours of the start of their camp session. This test will be sent to camper/staff addresses by Heed Health the company we are partnering with to perform Covid-19 test,

  3. Anyone who is sick, or recently in contact with someone with COVID-19 prior to attending camp (staff, campers, parents, family members, etc.), must not come to camp.

  4. Check yourself for any and all COVID-19 symptoms.

This summer we will be running 3 sessions of Wizards & Warriors Residential Camp. Each session will take place over a course of 13 days. Campers are expected to stay on-site for the entire duration of their camp session.

This summer campers will live in hotel-style rooms, with 2 queen sized beds and an attached bathroom. Campers will be sharing a room with only one other individual in the same cohort.

All camp tuition is non-refundable, UNLESS withdrawal of attendance is directly related to COVID-19. Any cancellations by campers due to suspected exposure before attending camp, any cancellations of a camp session due to pre-emptive pandemic security measures, and any cancellations due to a potential outbreak will be eligible for refunds. We want our campers and parents to feel safe and encourage them to make decisions that are in their best interest as well as the best interest for others.

Our summer camp scholarships and financial aid program is a partnership between the camper families, donating organizations, and The Story School’s donor fund.
The Story School is committed to assisting as many campers as possible in their quest to experience their own adventure at our summer camps. While we sometimes receive more requests than scholarships are available and occasionally are unable to accept an application, we strive to work with parents and organizations to assist as many children as we can. Scholarship requests for large amounts may require verification by a copy of your family’s most recent tax returns.
Each camper applicant must provide the following:
  • Three letters of recommendation from people not related to you. (Examples: teachers, principals, community leaders, neighbors)

  • A minimum one page completed Character History about the character you would choose to play, along with details specifying the costuming you and your family will provide.

  • A 5-6 paragraph answer to the following essay question: What do the terms Honor, Compassion, and Courage mean to you?

  • Parents, please click the button below to email the above items, plus the answer to the following questions, to Executive Director Chris Wiley. What percentage of the camp tuition are you requesting to be covered by this scholarship? Which camp is your child hoping to attend, how old is he/she, and why would he/she like to attend. Please describe your circumstances that qualify you for financial aid.

If you are an organization or individual wishing to provide financial assistance for children to attend one of our summer camps, please click the donate button below or contact us at (781) 214-1174 for more information. 100% of all donated funds are used for Summer Camp Scholarships for children.

Summer 2021 Camp Openings

Resident Camp Counselor/Hero Leader (19+)

Our hero leaders are camp counselors who provide a safe and memorable experience for our heroes. Hero Leaders will be responsible for an assigned adventuring party of 10 campers. Duties include monitoring meals, playing camp characters (in costume), and facilitating and participating in group activities. Hero leaders have a genuine passion for mentoring and empowering young people. Help our heroes navigate the world of Sidleterra, teach them what it means to be a hero, and help create a summer of lasting memories.

Our camp counselors receive one of the highest pay rates in the industry.

We provide training, costumes (although you can bring your own!), props, makeup, and foam weapons. In return, our expectations are high. We require you to be responsible, flexible, and reliable. You must fully embrace and adhere to the concept that this camp is for the campers. As such, the roles you play and the positions you hold are always in service of the entertainment value.  This is an exhausting, demanding job that requires both physical and mental endurance. But you will have the time of your life and we can guarantee that you will never be bored!

All camp staff are required to have previous experience working with kids and teens and be at least 18 years of age. Acting experience is not necessary but does help. We’re interested in mature decision makers – counselors and performers who like to take part in a creative, improvisational environment – but always with safety foremost in their mind. You must be exceptionally reliable and a good communicator. Punctuality is necessary as the nature of these activities requires precision timing. Professionalism is mandatory.

Please note that Wizards & Warriors Camp is owned and run by parents. Our own children attend these camps. Safety is our highest concern. We expect that it will be yours as well. References required. Pay is dependent on experience and schedule for 8 weeks, plus room and board (includes paid training).

This is an overnight position with onsite residency required with one or two days off each week and counselors are required to reside at the camp for the duration of employment.

Currently accepting applications from candidates over the age of 19

Staff must be available from July 5th to August 27th

All applicants must submit three references

All staff, performers, and volunteers must submit to a CORI and SORI Background Check, intensive screening, and reference check.

  • Love working with kids?
  • Have a fascination with the fantasy genre?
  • Have a very active imagination?
  • A responsible and good role model?
  • Don’t mind being hit with foam weapons?
  • Like to dress in costume and wear cool makeup?
  • Consider safety BEFORE anything else – no matter how fun?
  • Then you should apply to work with us!

Due to Covid-19 regulations and guidelines, The Story School will not be able to run our popular Monster/CIT Camp Program for the summer of 2021. Interested heroes aged 15 - 18 are invited to participate in our new Ranger Resident Camp Program instead. In addition to enjoying one more summer as a hero, these campers will also receive leadership training to prepare them for potential future counselor positions.

“This is the best camp experience my son has ever had! He can’t wait to go back! My son Ryan is usually the brainiac who no one really knows at home, but when we went to camp for the feast and heard he stood up in front of everyone to defend a spirit who no one else believed in and changed the minds of the rest, he experienced what I knew he could accomplish. Everyone was telling him how brave he was…I always knew my son could do wonderful things…but camp allowed him to show himself.”

-Marianne Murphy Harris

We're amazed and truly grateful to all of our donors from the past year, helping us raise over $23000, putting us almost halfway to our goal. However, the second half is often steeper than the first. We may be running with steam now, but we're still not out of the woods.

With the help of all of you, summer camp is officially happening this year at a beautiful in-person venue with over 70 heroes registered for their adventures. We cannot thank you enough for the generosity, patience, and support that has gotten us to this milestone. The donations from the last year have been distributed 50% directly towards scholarships for our campers in need, 25% towards our new camp venue in Sturbridge, and 25% towards the equipment necessary for an in-person camp. However...

There are still campers who need scholarships or they won't be able to attend. There are still costs left to cover all of the amenities of our venue. Lastly, we have decided to increase the amount of outsourced support for all pandemic-related safety precautions. We're asking our community to help us one more time as we round that final corner and begin the summer camp season.

Where will your donation go during this second half of the fundraiser? 50%, as always, will continue to go directly to campers as Where will your donation go during this second half of the fundraiser? 50% as always will continue to go directly to campers as scholarships as we are still receiving daily requests for campers to attend who cannot cover the costs themselves. 25% will continue to cover venue costs that despite the loosening of guidelines is still presenting an additional cost above and beyond our usual camp season, and the final 25% will be going toward our on-site professional COVID-19 testing, high-quality PPE, and compensating our additional staffing to ensure the safety of all campers, staff, heroes, monsters, and mages alike.

Thank you again to all of our donors thus far. Together we can make summer camp magical, safe, and an epic success.
