What is our Costumes and Creatures Fundraiser?
We like to joke that our favorite holiday of the year as a nonprofit LARP camp isn't Halloween (which seems obvious) but is instead the day AFTER Halloween because all costumes, props, and decorations go on sale!
We run this fundraiser to scare up as many funds as we can get our claws into by Halloween so that we can send our story team out to all the local Spirit, Party City, and other specialty stores to pick over the bones and stretch our money as far as possible.
It's a lot of fun for us and every dollar donated goes twice as far with 50% off at all the sales. Read below to find out why monsters matter at our camp and just what your donation means to our heroes at camp...

Why Do Monsters Matter?
At The Story School, we know the best learning, memories, and effort happens when campers are engaged. And at our LARP camp the best way to get them engaged is to make them believe...Make them believe the monsters, the stories, the characters are real and that they matter.
-
The Magic of "Wow"
-
We live for that magic moment where our campers stand there agape and ask each other "is this real?" or "how did they do that?!".
-
We work hard to transport them to a world where anything is possible so they never question what they are capable of doing and nothing transports them faster thant a monster towering over them.
-
-
Putting the Experience in Experiential Learning
-
We all know that discovery and curiosity are the best teachers. At Camp Fable and Grimoire, we use lights, sounds, costumes, makeup, and more to capture their attention and enthusiasm.
-
Crafting ethical choices that campers want to make, inspiring acts of honor to challenge their character, and setting up the chance to be brave is all about building an immersive experience.

How Much Does a Monster Cost?

*Cue Sarah Mclachlan music* For only dollars a day, you can adopt a monster...In all seriousness, so much goes into making monsters at The Story School. Not only are there the costs of the physical costumes and props we can find but because we have such creative heroes and fantastical stories, we have to make them ourselves. There's the fabric, the sprayfoam, the tools, the googly eyes, and the bandaids for our poor monster-makers after losing a fight against the glue gun and fabric scissors. Yikes!

Then, after painstankingly building these incredible creatures, we have to get the monsters to camp from their various lairs and workshops *cough, cough our poor directors' garages*. Sometimes we can get pretty creative with transportation. Every summer our executive director's vehicle transforms into a literal monster truck. But, other times, we just have to get the right vehicle for the job.

And finally, after the summer is over, we have to find a place to store these monstrosities until they are needed for the next round of heroes to test their courage against. And we are definitely running out of space to put them...So that's where you come in. Not only are you helping us build these creations, but your donations adopt these monsters to be used year after year. And if you let these creatures go without a home, wouldn't you be the real monster?
